Mathematics Level 1 Functional Skills

Course Overview

Level 1 Functional Skills Maths is a pre-GCSE course designed to improve your skills so that you are able to progress onto a Foundation GCSE Maths course. Level 1 Functional Maths is a recognised national qualification that can help for further studies and apprenticeships.

This course is an option within our Progression Support ESOL programme for students who clearly demonstrate the potential for advanced level study but, at the time of application have had insufficient time in Key Stage 4 to develop the underpinning language skills to enable immediate progression to advanced level.

Entry Qualifications

Either by previous qualification, a grade 1 at GCSE or Entry 3 Functional Maths or following an interview and written test.

What will I study?

Your course will focus on three main topic areas: Number, Shape and Measures, and Data Handling. In Functional Maths there is a focus on using Maths in real-world situations where, for example, you may need to calculate costs or understand information in charts and tables. You will also work on some of the topics required to be successful at GCSE such as foundation algebra and using formulaes.

How will I study?

You will study in a class for around 5 hours every week. You will use materials from books, teacher resources and from the internet

How is the course examined?

There is a formal written exam for Level 1 Functional Maths. This consists of two papers, one non-calculator and one with a calculator. We currently hold exams at several points throughout the year and if you pass you will be able to move onto a GCSE Foundation course.

Where next?

When you have been successful and passed your Level 1 course, you will be able to join a Foundation GCSE Maths class.

What does the course combine well with?

Level 1 Functional Maths is suitable for any student who needs to build up their mathematical skills before starting a GCSE Maths course.
