Entry Qualifications
In addition to the standard College entry requirements (see below) this course requires students to have achieved grade 66 or above in GCSE Combined Science (Higher Tier) or a minimum of 655 in the separate sciences which should normally include grade 6 or above in Biology. Grade 5 or above in GCSE Mathematics (Higher Tier) and English Language is also normally required.
What will I study?
The course is designed to follow on from GCSE Science and is modern in approach emphasising important biological principles of physiological biochemistry, genetics and the biology of DNA, evolution through natural selection, and ecology.
How will I study?
At A-level students are more responsible than ever before for their own study and learning. From the beginning of the course the students will be encouraged to make their own class notes during lessons. These will be supplemented by printed handouts. Students will have plenty of opportunity to ask questions and take part in discussions.
Around five hours private study time each week should be used to do written assignments, complete practical accounts, to read around the subject using a variety of sources and revise and learn topics for the regularly set end of topic tests.
How is the course examined?
The A-level will consist of three written examinations at the end of the second year. Practical skills will also be assessed, and a separate practical endorsement will be awarded.

There has never been a better time to study Biology, which is an increasingly important subject in the modern world. You can study Biology because you find living things fascinating for their own sake, or because you need it to gain entry into the applied biological professions, medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, optics, or conservation.
This AQA specification allows us to inspire students, nurture a passion for Biology and lay the groundwork for further study. The biotechnology- based industries, which include the pharmaceutical and chemical companies, are also major employers of biological scientists.
What does the course combine well with?
Biology combines well with other sciences, Maths or Psychology at A-level. It can also be taken in combination with social sciences, arts and Sport Studies. Students may also want to consider combining the course with Advanced Level subjects.
College Entry Requirements
We normally expect applicants to have achieved good GCSE passes in at least six subjects, these must:
- demonstrate the suitability for Advanced Level study
- have been achieved at Grade 4/C as a minimum
- include two at Grade 5/B as a minimum
- include English Language – a minimum grade of 4/C
- Mathematics at a grade 4/C as a minimum
