Performing Arts (Dance) at Studio 79 BTEC Level 3 National Extended Diploma in Performing Arts Practice

Entry Qualifications

A minimum of five GCSEs, or equivalent, at grade A* – C or 4 – 9, including English Language and/or a Level 2 Dance qualification.

What will I study?

Learners will develop their craft by progressing their dance, choreography and performance skills through the medium of workshops, rehearsals and performances, giving them a full understanding of the disciplines and the backgrounds behind them whilst perfecting their technique. You should have an interest in developing broad skills, knowledge and understanding based on the practical needs and concerns of the performing arts industry.

This is a vocational qualification which will make demands on your body and your brain. Learners will develop their craft by progressing their dance, choreography and performance skills through the medium of workshops, rehearsals and performances, giving them a full understanding of the disciplines and the backgrounds behind them whilst perfecting their technique.

How will I study?

Learners will have the opportunity to develop creative and compositional dance skills through devising, creating and performing individually as well as part of a group, actively providing creative input along the rehearsal process to produce exciting and dynamic new work for your projects. Along with a competent understanding of health and fitness, students will develop an awareness of the lesser known areas in the performing arts business to create a full understanding of the industry.

As part of the Level 3 Extended Diploma, students are expected to explore the performing arts world independently to further aid their studies. This may include teaching, attending other dance master classes, going to auditions or even finding professional work part-time. Students receive full support and guidance to aid with their progression and the decisions presented to them upon completion of the course.

How is the course examined?

You will be encouraged to demonstrate your skills and talent by being assessed in practical ways with practical exams combined with theoretical written work. Your work will be moderated by a visiting moderator. You will be continually assessed during your course through a series of practical performance and work-related assignments. Learners will have opportunity to complete exam work in ISTD Ballet and Tap.

Where next?

The BTEC Extended Diploma is the equivalent of 3 A Levels and can lead to further study in Drama, Theatre Studies, Dance and Performing Arts in Higher Education at degree or HND level. It can be used as part of your course to broaden your studies and may lead on to a career in the performing arts industries.

What does the course combine well with?

This is a full-time course. However, students will be required to retake GCSE English or Maths if necessary.
