Sicily Trip

On the early hours of Tuesday 13th October, 50 students of A level Geography and Ancient History set off on our residential trip to Sicily.

Our first day involved visiting the Valley of the Temples in the south-west of the island, a remarkable site of Ancient Greek civilisation with temples dating from the 5th century BCE.

Following this, on Wednesday, we visited the lava field at Zarrerena, which was created by the 1992 eruption of Mount Etna, before stopping at the Oro D’Etna honey shop and factory. The afternoon was spent enjoying an amazing ascent of Mount Etna via cable car and jeep. We were very lucky to have fantastic weather with great views of both the volcano and the Sicilian landscape.

Thursday was an early start to head to the island of Vulcano, one of the volcanic Aeolian Islands. We travelled by ferry before hiking to the top of the Grand Crater and seeing the impressive views and fumaroles. After returning back to the harbour, we spent an afternoon enjoying drinks and ice creams before the ferry back to Sicily’s mainland.

Our final day was spent admiring the Alcantara Gorge and visiting the beautiful coastal town of Taormina, including the Greek theatre. We all had a fantastic and very memorable time and the students were great company and a credit to the college.
