On 8 May 2026, the college proudly joined national and global celebrations to mark the 100th birthday of Sir David Attenborough, one of the most influential figures in natural history and wildlife conservation.
Staff and students were delighted to take part in the launch of these celebrations, which were supported by distinguished guest Ian Redmond OBE, a close professional and personal friend of Sir David. Ian is one of the world’s leading primatologists and conservationists and was present at one of the most iconic moments in natural history broadcasting, when Sir David was famously filmed interacting with apes in the wild. An inspiring speaker, Ian is also an ambassador for the Born Free Foundation, the Ape Alliance, and the United Nations Environment Programme, and shared powerful insights into conservation and Sir David’s enduring legacy.
The event also welcomed two young representatives from the UK Children’s Parliament and Born Free, who delivered thoughtful speeches alongside our own students. The celebrations continued with a musical performance of Happy Birthday, before the community came together on the field to create the number 100, marking this remarkable milestone.
A special highlight was the stunning archival display curated by our LRC Manager, Martina, showcasing material connected to Sir David’s early life. Martina also read a poem written by Sir David himself during his time at Wyggeston Boys’ School, offering a rare and personal glimpse into the early creativity of this national treasure.
It was a memorable and inspiring occasion, celebrating not only a centenary but a lifetime of curiosity, storytelling, and commitment to protecting the natural world.
