The Sport department at WQE hosted a fun packed Health Festival for the Leicester City School Sport & Physical Activity Network (SSPAN).
The event took place on 3rd December and welcomed KS1 pupils from five schools from across Leicester city– Spinney Hill Primary School, Dovelands Primary School, St. Thomas CE Primary School and Granby Primary School.
The festival included activity stations, with groups of pupils taking part in street dance, yoga, riding a smoothie bike, mindfulness, healthy eating and boxercise. SSPAN partners Leicester Tigers trainers were also present to a deliver rugby activity.
Second year WQE students from the Level 3 Sports course were sports leaders and ambassadors on the day. As part of unit 2 of the course, they were assessed on the performance of their given roles – instructing pupils on how to conduct different activities.
Zuber Mohtat, Assistant Curriculum Area Leader for Health and Sport at WQE said: “WQE College Sports Department have been working with Leicester City SSPAN for a number of years and have used our sports facilities to host several Key Stage 1 Health and well-being festivals. They have provided our Level 3 Sport students with leadership training and the opportunity to support and lead sessions. Our students have found this beneficial which has helped them develop many transferable life and leadership skills which will hopefully open doors for them in higher education or employment.”
Leicester City SSPAN works closely with the city’s primary, secondary and special schools to develop high quality opportunities in PE and Sport for all young people to encourage life-long activity and a healthy lifestyle.
