Entry Qualifications
In addition to the standard College entry requirements (see below), to enrol on the 3 to 5 course you will need a grade 3 at GCSE or equivalent in Mathematics. If you have achieved a grade 2 or equivalent previously then you will be enrolled on the 2 to 5 course which still provides the opportunity to gain a grade 4 or 5 in one year. You need a positive attitude and a hard-working mentality.
What will I study?
This course is Linear which means all topic areas are tested in three one and a half hour exams at the end of the course. One paper is without a calculator and the other two using a calculator. The course focuses on:
• Applying mathematics in context
• Problem solving
• Reasoning
Topics within Handling Data, Number, Algebra and Shape will be studied. You will estimate probability, calculate averages and represent data in charts and graphs. You will develop your arithmetic skills and build your confidence
in handling different types of numbers, such as fractions, decimals and primes. You will learn how to draw graphs to represent real life problems. You will learn the properties of angles and different shapes, calculate how many litres of water fill your local swimming pool and find out why. Throughout the course you will develop your problem-solving skills and learn how to apply your knowledge to real life situations.
How will I study?
We use a variety of teaching styles, including ICT, practical activities and resources produced by the government’s Department for Education and Skills. But, of course, there is no substitute for good old-fashioned work and practising questions from textbooks and past papers is vital if you are to have real success in the exams.
How is the course examined?
There will two opportunities to sit exams (set by the AQA Examining Board). If you are close to achieving a Grade 4 in June you may be able to re-sit your exams in November. We will also assess everyone on entry in September to see if they have the skills to sit the exam early. Otherwise you will be able build up your skills over the year and sit your exams in June 2022.
Where next?
Maths is a subject that is really valued by employers as it develops your analytical and problem-solving skills, so gaining a grade 4 or higher will definitely benefit you in the long run. It will also allow you to progress to a variety of Level 3 courses, which in turn will open the door to a wide range of degree courses
